WHY WOULD A SUCCESSFUL
EXECUTIVE SEEK COACHING?

As an Executive Coach I’m often asked why a successful executive would seek coaching. It's a valid question.

My response? "Do you have a favourite sports figure?" The answer typically is yes.

Then I ask, "Do you think they have a coach?" Again, the answer usually leans towards yes.

So, why would a top performer who’s already mastered their craft engage a coach?

The truth is, coaching transcends mere skills refinement, competence or performance optimisation. It's more than just getting better at what you do.

Why the sporting analogy?

Executive coaching has its roots in sports psychology, with seminal works like "The Inner Game of Tennis" (Gallwey, 1974). Gallwey coached the Harvard tennis team coined the terms INNER and OUTER GAME. His work with Whitmore, (Coaching for Performance, 1992) laid the foundation for executive coaching's evolution over the past three decades.

So, what distinguishes the INNER GAME from the OUTER GAME?

The OUTER GAME pertains to the observable aspects of performance, like skills and tactics, while the INNER GAME delves into the mental and emotional fortitude required for peak performance, addressing issues such as self-doubt and anxiety. To optimise success both the OUTER and INNER GAMES need to be in sync.

Whether on the court or in the boardroom, these principles are timeless and universally applicable, underscoring their relevance to leadership.

Masterful leadership demands more than just competence and experience; it necessitates wisdom, creativity, and courage. It requires adeptly playing both the OUTER and INNER GAMES to navigate today's complex challenges successfully.

Here's how a coach might assist an executive to hone their OUTER and INNER GAMES:

INNER GAME:

1.    Enhancing emotional intelligence
2.    Increasing self-confidence
3.    Improving work-life balance
4.    Developing leadership skills

OUTER GAME:

5.    Gaining an outside perspective
6.    Navigating career transitions
7.    Enhancing communication skills
8.    Cultivating strategic thinking
9.    Boosting productivity
10.  Enhancing overall performance
